A return flight for Irish nationals has been arranged after flights were suspended in Morocco

The Department of State is chartering a flight from Marrakesh for those seeking to return to Ireland after flights to and from Morocco have been suspended.

It was confirmed earlier this week that flights to and from Morocco will be suspended until at least December 13 amid concerns about the Covid-19 variant Omicron.

A charter flight for those wishing to return to Ireland will depart from Marrakesh on Saturday 4 December.

The ministry said that many citizens who found themselves in this position have already made contact with the Irish Embassy in Rabat.

Those who have not yet done so are requested to immediately email the Embassy at [email protected]. Management will then provide further instructions on how to reserve a place on the flight.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney said: «As regular commercial flights from Morocco are not available at the moment, I have instructed officials to make arrangements for those who wish to return to Ireland as soon as possible.»

«Ambassador MacIntyre and his team at the recently opened embassy in Rabat will continue to support citizens in the coming days to ensure a safe journey home,» Coveney said.

«I would like to thank Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and the Moroccan authorities for their assistance and cooperation in granting the necessary permits to operate this special flight,» he said.

«We continue to provide consular assistance to Irish citizens elsewhere in the world who are affected by travel restrictions.»

The flight will be operated on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs by Ryanair.

Those considering travel over the coming weeks are encouraged to note that restrictions are subject to change at short notice, and that all passengers should do appropriate research and carefully consider the necessity of their travel at this time.

The department said it’s also important to check with your travel insurance provider about coverage before you travel and to check travel instructions for your destination on its website.

In October, Morocco said it would suspend flights to and from Britain, Germany, the Netherlands and Russia due to concerns about coronavirus trends in those countries.

Morocco has officially recorded about 950,000 cases of the Covid-19 virus and more than 14,500 deaths.
