A warning to Irish tourists that popular areas in Spain and Greece are marked as red areas

Some of the most popular holiday resorts in Spain and Greece are marked as red zones on the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control’s Covid-19 map.

This reflects the high rates of Covid in these countries currently marked in red which means ECDC is only recommending travel for essential reasons.

However, with an EU Digital Covid Cert, you will still be able to travel freely to these areas – but may have to endure stricter restrictions if they are imposed to stem high virus rates.

Ibiza, Menorca, and Palma are among the many parts of Spain marked in dark red while the 13 Greek islands that include Mykonos, Santorini, and Rhodes are included.

Greek Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias said Thursday that Mykonos and Ios are «one step» away from the authorities imposing the restrictions.

As of July 30, Spain’s 14-day Covid-19 infection rate is now 783.67 – and on the same date, Ireland’s infection rate was 304.24.

Greece’s rate is only slightly higher than Ireland’s at 346.22, and Portugal at 436.22.

It comes as the Ministry of Health has officially launched an online portal where people who have not received their digital Covid certificates can apply for one.

The government has been sending physical copies of certificates to people who have been vaccinated or recovered form Covid-19 in the past six months.

However, a large number of people have been complaining that they have not yet received the important document that is used to facilitate travel abroad as well as indoor dining in Ireland.

The Ministry of Health previously launched a helpline for people with inquiries regarding issues with certificates, however it has been plagued by complaints with some people leaving waiting hours to access them.

A website has now been launched for people to apply for their certificates without having to call the helpline.

People will also be able to request changes to their certificate through the site.

A statement from the department read: “In addition to the COVID digital certificate toll-free phone number and online redemption certificate application form, a COVID digital certificate self-service portal was launched today.

This will allow members of the public to:

  • Request changes to a digital COVID certificate already received;
  • request that their digital COVID certificate be sent via email;
  • Check the status of their digital COVID vaccination certificate as it has not yet been received; And
  • Keep asking for a refund certificate

“In addition to the helpline, we are constantly striving to improve our digital COVID certification services and the introduction of this online self-service portal provides another channel to allow members of the public to request their certification. Work is underway to develop and launch more accessible channels in the coming weeks to help meet public demand.” .

You can request your location by heading to https://covidcertificateportal.gov.ie/.
