Covid-19 Ireland updates: Over 12,000 new cases confirmed as number of hospital admissions falls below 600

Another 12,336 cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed by the Ministry of Health.

Of these, 6,697 confirmed PCR cases and 5,639 positive cases were registered through the Health, Safety and Environment Portal.

As of 8 a.m. today, 597 COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized, of whom 66 are in the intensive care unit.

Covid-19 restrictions continue to ease across Europe.

The Spanish government has voted to scrap the requirement for face masks in outdoor public places from next Wednesday – despite the Spanish parliament’s vote to keep the mask in place.

Masks became mandatory on exit in March 2020, when Spain first emerged from lockdown after the first wave of infections.

In March 2021, an additional tightening of the mask-wearing rules was introduced to include people wearing masks in nearly all indoor and outdoor settings.

But Irish tourists traveling over this summer won’t have to deal with mask rules anymore.

«I can confirm that on Tuesday, February 8, we will take the royal decree to the Spanish Cabinet through which we will abolish the rule for external face masks,» Spanish Health Minister Carolina Daria confirmed.

«Before that on Monday, we will hold an inter-regional meeting between regional governments to discuss the legislation.»
